Cranial Electrotherapy
Stimulation

CES (cranial electrotherapy stimulation) is a simple non-invasive approach to stress management. CES is a non-drug approach to treat depression, anxiety, insomnia and addiction.
It uses mild battery-powered electrical stimulation through clip-on electrodes attached to the earlobes. Current flow is limited so that the most a user will experience during the process is a slight tingling sensation.
Like many drugs, its exact mechanisms are not known. Its tiny “microcurrents” are thought to stimulate the areas of the brain responsible for neurotransmitter and hormone production.
During CES, an electric current is focused upon the hypothalamic region resulting in an increase in endorphins, an increase of the brain's levels of serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine, and a decrease in its level of cortisol.
The Alpha-Stim® has been shown in clinical studies to increase the brain's production of serotonin, beta endorphins, and alpha wave activity. Alpha waves are the brain waves one feels when they are alert yet relaxed.
Some benefits you may experience include:
|
|
|---|
1. Is it safe?- Yes. Electricity is perfectly safe at the level that Alpha-Stim® delivers. Remember, we all have electrical currents flowing throughout our brain and body at all times. Alpha-Stim® uses tiny currents close to the amount that flows naturally in our systems.
2. Is it like shock therapy or something?- No, not at all. Shock therapy uses a current that is 1000 times greater than the Alpha-Stim®. We use current close to your body's own naturally occurring electrical current. To many patients the feeling is subsensational.
Alpha-Stim® is an extremely safe treatment, that unlike shock therapy, has no major adverse effects ever reported.
3. Will I feel better after the first use?- Maybe. Many people that use the Alpha-Stim® report benefit after the first use. Keep in mind that it may take one to 3 weeks however for some people to feel benefit. It will depend on how your body reacts to the input.
These effects can be produced after a single treatment, and repeated treatments have been shown to increase the relative strength and duration of these effects.
The benefits are cumulative.
4. What Does it feel like. Does it hurt?
You may feel a slight tingling sensation under the electrodes, but it is not necessary to feel this in order to achieve results. Most people feel nothing at all except positive results.
Remember- the body likes and needs electrons, the flow of electrons (electricity), and electrically charged particles to operate. Low levels of electricity are safe!

This second chart was taken from the same patient after 10 minutes of Alpha-Stim® use. It shows beneficial smoothing of the brain waves to a normal pattern. |
